How the word counter works

Word Counter provides instantaneous metrics on written text directly in your browser. As you paste or type your draft, the tool tokenizes your words using Unicode-aware whitespace boundaries, counts total characters (with and without whitespace), estimates sentence boundaries based on terminal punctuation marks, and calculates reading time based on an average adult speed of 200 words per minute.

All parsing happens entirely in your local browser runtime. No text is transmitted across the internet, logged into remote databases, or shared with third parties. This makes it safe for sensitive corporate briefs, unpublished manuscripts, private emails, and school assignments.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Paste or type your text directly into the main input editor.
  2. Review real-time live statistics for words, characters, sentences, and estimated reading time.
  3. Copy your reviewed content or use the clear button to reset the editor for your next draft.

Word & Reading Time Calculation Method

Reading Time (minutes) = Math.ceil(Total Words / 200)

Words are identified by splitting text along whitespace characters while filtering out empty tokens. Character count calculates the length of UTF-16 code units or Unicode code points. Reading time assumes an average silent reading speed of 200 words per minute, rounded up to the nearest whole minute.

Practical example

A 450-word blog post introduction will register 450 words, approximately 2,800 characters (including spaces), and an estimated reading time of 3 minutes (450 ÷ 200 = 2.25, rounded up to 3).

Frequently asked questions

Does this word counter support languages other than English?

Yes. The tokenization handles Latin, Cyrillic, Greek, Arabic, and most alphabetic scripts that separate words using standard whitespace characters.

Is there a limit on how long the text can be?

Because calculations run on your device's memory, you can comfortably analyze long documents, essays, and chapters up to tens of thousands of words without lag.

Is my text uploaded or stored on any server?

Never. FreeToolKit processes all text locally in your browser memory. Nothing is transmitted over the network or saved to remote databases.
