How the hash generator works
Hash Generator produces deterministic cryptographic hash digests from any plain text string using the browser's native Web Crypto API (`SubtleCrypto.digest`). Cryptographic hash functions map arbitrary-length input data into a fixed-length hexadecimal string. Even a minor change in the input produces an entirely different hash (the avalanche effect).
Use hashes to verify file integrity, test password hashing pipelines, or generate checksums without sending sensitive plaintext over the internet.
Step-by-step instructions
- Enter or paste your text into the input field.
- Select your desired algorithm: SHA-1, SHA-256, or SHA-512.
- View the calculated hexadecimal hash digest and copy it to your clipboard.
NIST FIPS 180-4 Secure Hash Standards
HashDigest = crypto.subtle.digest(algorithm, new TextEncoder().encode(text))Input text is converted to a UTF-8 byte array and processed through the chosen cryptographic compression function (SHA-1 = 160 bits, SHA-256 = 256 bits, SHA-512 = 512 bits) to yield a hexadecimal output digest.
Practical example
Input: 'hello' • SHA-256: 2cf24dba5fb0a30e26e83b2ac5b9e29e1b161e5c1fa7425e73043362938b9824 • SHA-512: 9b71d224bd62f3785d96d46ad3ea3d73319bfbc2890caadae2dff72519673ca72323c3d99ba5c11d7c7acc6e14b8c5da0c4663475c2e5c3adef46f73bcdec043
Frequently asked questions
Can a hash be decrypted back to the original text?
No. Cryptographic hashes are one-way functions designed to be mathematically irreversible. They cannot be 'decrypted'.
Which hash algorithm should I use for security?
SHA-256 and SHA-512 are current industry standards recommended for cryptographic security. SHA-1 is deprecated for security purposes and should only be used for legacy checksum verification.
Does this tool transmit my text to a server?
No. All hashing is performed directly in your browser using the native Web Crypto API. Sensitive passwords and keys remain private.
